On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, hostilities ceased on the Western Front as Germany signed an armistice agreement with the Allies ending the Great War. It was believed that this was “the war to end all wars” and the date was commemorated as Armistice Day. Following World War II, the day was renamed Veterans Day in the U.S. On November 11 Americans pause to remember those who have served in the armed forces.
Veterans Day was created as a time to celebrate the brave men and women that have fought or are fighting for our country. From folding a flag correctly to going up to shake the hand of a past-soldier, a multitude of things can be done to show our appreciation towards our veterans. Veterans Day doesn’t honor the military dead, but honors all who are alive those who have honorably served in the military. It doesn’t matter if the person served during war or during peaceful times. If they have been part of the military at any time, then they are celebrated on Veterans Day.
